| One of the best martial arts movies of all time!!!!! The only problem with Jeff 's martial arts ability is that he is so fast that some of his movements are lost even when going frame by frame on a VHS tape. I'm really curious to see if that would be any better on a DVD. Get with it, movie studios! They are a lot of great movies on tape that should be on DVD. |

Cnn: Cold War (8pc)

| This is an excellent series, done in a similar style to the WWII documentary "World at War" (both were produced by Jeremy Isaacs--Ted Turner had seen that earlier program and asked Isaacs to produce a cold war documentary). Unfortunately it's never been put on DVD, and the VHS version has long been out of print, with used copies typically fetching over a hundred dollars. So if you want to see it and don't care too much about video quality, I recommend going to video dot google dot com and doing a search for something like "cnn cold war", or "cold war" plus a specific episode title--most or all can be found online. |

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

| This has to be one of the most anticipated DVD releases of last year. For quite a while, I was trying to find a VHS copy, while hoping that this would finally come out on DVD. We had JACK on DVD, but not this documentary with almost mythical status. But, now it's out, and it's great. I'm not a fan of certain documentary filmmakers (cough...Ken Burns) who try to create drama with filmmaking smoke and mirrors. "Cue music, cue Morgan Freeman or Anthony Hopkins reading a letter, then cut to historian explaining what it all means." I'm much more of a fan of someone like Robert Drew, whose films on JFK allow an almost voyeuristic view into the subject. HEARTS OF DARKNESS has moments that absolutely spellbind you, particularly the scenes with Brando as he basically riffs until stating that he has nothing left to say AND the scene where Martin Sheen basically melts down in front of our eyes as Coppola eggs it on. What makes this so special is that you realize that both the film and the film about the film are rare gems that we may never see again. There will never be another APOCALYPSE NOW--the times and the industry have radically changed. "Just recreate the jungle with CGI." And, there will not be another HEARTS OF DARKNESS. A must-see. |

Trinity and Beyond! The Atomic Bomb Movie

| I had caught a glimpse of this movie on cable and knew immediately that I had to have it. The movie is eerie and powerful and the soundtrack adds such a punch it will move you. William Shatner narrates with a calm, matter-of-factness which only adds to the feeling of how the U.S. militarycontinually tested with no regard to the environment. We all understand how the U.S. needed to develop the bomb before the enemy did but, the amount of testing after the fact just feels like a boys-with-toys mentality. Enough with the political speech. It amazes me how something so destructive can be so beautiful and awesome. When they show the Thermo-nuclear tests you see the huge and eerie build-up just before the shockwave lets loose. Incredible! Also fascinating is the testing done in space. Check out the symetry of the reaction. I guess if aliens attack we know we can blow them up before they get into the atmosphere!Check out this movie! You will not be disappointed! |

| Upon seeing the restored and re-released film in 1981, I placed this silent at the top of my list of favorite foreign films from the silent era. The use of triptych, color, and daring camera angles is breathtaking! Gance was one of film's innovative pioneering geniuses. Although at times the acting is a bit stilted, the viewer must remember that these actors are turn-of-the-century schooled; today's acting style is far different and more relaxed. The electricity sparks between Napoleon and Josephine. Finally, Coppola's score is unforgettable, haunting, and touching. This film is one to add to your film collection! |

| Buyer beware! The newer DVD set of this FABULOUS series is not up to the quality of this VHS edition. The DVDs are made by the History channel, and the sound quality is awful. This older VHS version, produced by New Line features (although on tape) has a much finer sound quality and even the video isn't that bad, compared to the lousey transfer of the DVDs.These are still the finest chronicles of war footage AND narration that have been made of WWll, in my opinion. Try to get thru them without tearing up at the human sacrifice and bravery.UPDATE: Mill Creek Entertainment now has a 3 disc DVD set for UNDER $10.00 with all the 26 episodes. I have compared them side by side PIP on my TV....Identical prints as the VHS tapes, only slightly sharper on the DVD's. Sound quality same as tapes, Great bargain! |

Songs of the Civil War

There's minimal narration here. The music and the artists do the storytelling and the performers treat all the songs with great respect. It's wonderful to hear Sweet Honey in the Rock singing "No More Auction Block for Me" and then listen to Ronnie Gilbert belt out "Lincoln and Liberty". It is this juxtaposition that makes this video outstanding. I especially want to commend Kathy Mattea's offerings. She is truly in her element here. This is what she should be singing. It is also wonderful to hear three late greats - Waylon Jennings, John Hartford, and Hoyt Axton.
The instrumentals are also outstanding. "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" has overtones of Charles Ives as the marching band starts out in the distance, passes by, and then continues off. "Ashokan Farewell" is a beautiful and fittingly melancholy introduction to the video. "Taps" is chilling in its simplicity especially when it ends the video and you have seen and heard songs that tell the horror of war fought on our soil.
Overall, this is a "must have" for those interested in period music. It certainly should be on the shelves of every elementary and high school in the country. I would encourage a purchase of the cd as well. |

Revolutionary War 2 Volume Set

| Be warned: This two-hour documentary IS NOT the excellent 6-hour series with the same title that was produced by Carol Fleisher, narrated by Charles Kuralt, and televised by The Learning Channel (TLC). This is a greatly inferior version which is being misidentified as the Kuralt program; I know because I bought it and am now returning it to the seller. It is laughably bad. The TLC Kuralt series is currently unavailable in VHS as of 8/06. As another reviewer here corrected advised, SAVE YOUR MONEY, not to mention your time and trouble, and do not buy this one. |
